Intern Architect

Mafe González

I grew up:

In Caracas, Venezuela.

Education:

Master of Architecture, Simon Bolivar University, Caracas, Venezuela

Notable accomplishments/awards:

Part of the winning team of the “Collaboration with Local Stakeholders” award at the 2018 PBL for Sustainable Cities Conference from CityLab LA in Bogota, Colombia, with Simon Bolivar University.
Third place in the Macro-Design category and honourable mention in the Micro-Design category of the “Trazando Espacios Publicos en Petare Sur” contest for public space design in slums.

I chose JDa because:

I feel really inspired by the possibility of working on civic projects that will improve our communities. I also love the warm environment provided by the firm, and then there’s Louie, the most wonderful dog ever.

I bring to JDa:

My passion for design and arts, combined with technical skills developed by working on many different kinds of projects during my studies and professional career. I also bring a lot of monochrome clothing, and of course, my Latin flavour.

Path to architecture:

Architecture has been a part of my life since I was a child because my dad is an architect, and I was into arts and crafts from a very young age. I tried to do something different by studying civil engineering, but it was just meant to be.

Architects I admire the most:

Tadao Ando, for his sublime use of the material and complex yet minimalistic designs that always find a way to play with natural light. Mies van der Rohe is another one of my favourites because I love the way he defines and frames spaces, combining industrial materials with a clean and minimalistic aesthetic.

A space that has affected me:

Tate Modern Museum by Herzog & de Meuron in London, UK. This building changed the way I see architecture, showing me how we can revitalize existing buildings and take advantage of their best features to create something great and exciting.
