Artist I would like to collaborate with on a design project:

I’m fascinated by Edward Burtynsky’s work which uses photography to try and capture the effect that humans have on a landscape scale. I believe that architecture has the opportunity to communicate between the scale of the landscape and the scale of the individual. Burtynsky seems like the perfect artist to explore this idea in collaboration with.

I’m inspired by:

Jacques Tati, Wong Kar-wai, Nan Goldin, Lauren Greenfield, Stephen Shore, Syd Mead, Edwards Hopper, Atelier Van Lieshout.

When I’m not working you can find me:

In the kitchen making a mess or outside taking pictures, hiking, camping, and cycling.

Favorite podcasts:

The Adventure Zone, Fun City, Articles of Intrest, My Brother My Brother and Me, Song Exploder.

Go-to unit of measurement:

Metric! It warms my heart every time a recipe provides measurements in grams.

On my playlist:

Car Seat Headrest, BadBadNotGood, The National,  Scallops Hotel, Diet Cig.

Pizza topping:

Pepperoncini and eggplant, or potato Bianca.

Pen, pencil or mouse?

Pen makes my shaky lines look as good as they can.

I grew up:

I come from Southern Ontario, growing up in Kitchener and London before moving out East to attend Dalhousie University.

Education:

Initially, I studied in a double-major program split between psychology and my primary subject of interest, sustainability. During this time, I also helped to establish and Chair a non-profit which focused on decreasing barriers to accessing natural space by leading people on trips into the wilderness using Halifax’s bus routes. After two years in this program, I applied to the Dalhousie Bachelor of Environmental Design Program. During my architectural education, I focused on designing civic buildings that direct attention to their environmental context and the scarcity of resources. My Master’s thesis studied Niagara Falls’ history of spectacle-making and worked to direct attention back toward the majesty of the great lakes.

I’m most excited in architecture today about:

I think the way the BIM has shortened the distance between design and rendering is an exciting opportunity to involve the building’s user groups. A conversation about the way people want to live and how architecture can support and enhance that lifestyle is one of the most fun aspects of this work. I feel like we are getting access to more and more tools to translate between the images in our heads and drawings that a readable to the public, enriching these conversations.

Architect I admire most:

Peter Barber is an architect doing stunning work in the typology of Council Housing. His work demonstrates a mastery of material and sensitivity for the homes’ inhabitants that I think is unmatched. Ultimately, I think he demonstrates that the constraints of a given project provide the richest opportunities for interesting design moves, both aesthetically and socially.

Favourite space:

I love movie theatres and libraries, but I haven’t had the opportunity to visit many of the famous ones. The early IMAX theatres, like the one in the Toronto Science Centre, are very interesting. I hope to visit Phillips Exeter Library and the Liyuan Library in Jiaojiehe.
