What I’m passionate about:
#RollingStones #WestCoastNature #ArchitecturalSketch #MuscleCars #TorontoRaptors #VanCityBasketball #MidCenturyModern
A space that has affected me:
Seattle’s Central Library interior – the use of colour and volume is inspiring.
Preferred era in architecture:
Mid-century Modern
Material that excites me:
I enjoy the freedom concrete provides. It can take any form needed.
Artist I would like to collaborate with on a design project:
Ron Wood. Yes, he is a Rolling Stone but he is also a talented painter.
I chose Vancouver because:
I feel that once you live here and get used to the proximity to the ocean and mountains there really is nowhere else to live. You have to be able to tolerate the rain, though.
I’m concerned about:
The environment. Mankind has had such a negative impact on this planet. Having said that, I haven’t yet stopped dreaming of owning a large truck with a huge engine.
Go-to morning drink:
Coffee – black at the office but with cream and sugar at home or when ordered.
Pen, pencil or markers?
Markers for sketching.
Edward Craig
I grew up:
I feel like I grew up in Vancouver (where I lived for 12 years as a child and teen, and moved back when I was 21 years old), but my earliest years were spent in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Kenora, Ontario where I was born.
Education:
Graduate of the RAIC Syllabus Program
Diploma in Architectural Technology, Sheridan College, Ontario
Notable accomplishments/awards:
I was part of the Sheridan College men’s basketball team that won the Canadian National Championship
I chose JDa because:
I had worked in a larger firm for a number of years and being part of a smaller, dynamic group where there was potential to grow with the firm appealed to me.
I bring to JDa:
Height – at 6’6″ I can reach the high shelves. I would also like to think a positive attitude. Plus my design sense and technical knowledge round out the senior staff skillset.
Path to architecture:
After working in architectural offices for five years one of my colleagues suggested that I continue my education in the RAIC Syllabus Program. She was an architect and I had a lot of respect for her, so I gave it a shot.
I’m drawn to design because:
There is something satisfying about solving problems that serve both the user and are aesthetically pleasing at the same time.
My design philosophy:
Keep it simple. Every line should have a purpose.
Architect I admire the most:
Richard Neutra. He designed flexible, open spaces, with an appealing, airy lightness, particularly in his custom homes.
