Emerald Liang
I grew up:
I was born in Vancouver, but I spent my childhood across three cities: ShenZhen, GuangZhou, and Vancouver.
Education:
I completed my Bachelor of Architecture at Pratt Institute, with minors in Sustainability Studies and Morphology.
Notable accomplishments/awards:
Currently, I’d say the AIA Brooklyn Commendation for Climate Sustainability Exhibition Award, given for a studio-wide student design-build Passive House Ice Box Challenge.
I chose JDa because:
Its work is rooted in community and intention. I was drawn to the firm’s commitment to meaningful public projects, thoughtful environmental design, and above all, a team where the work felt human and the people weren’t afraid to think out loud.
I bring to JDa:
Calmness under pressure.
I’m drawn to design because:
It changes how we experience time, space, and each other.
Artist I would like to collaborate with on a design project
James Turrell. Or anyone who understands light like it’s a material.
Wood or steel?
Wood.
Pen, pencil or mouse?
Pen for notes, pencil for sketching, mouse for deadlines.
Skill still unmastered:
Parallel parking under pressure and keeping plants alive.
If I wasn’t an architect, I would be:
I’ve always found VFX fascinating. I’d probably pursue a path in that direction.
Best way to decompress:
Making a dalgona coffee or matcha latte.
