Taylor Bilenduke
I grew up:
I was born in Churchill, MB, and raised in a small town outside of Winnipeg, MB. Basically, two of the coldest places in the world.
Education:
I completed a Bachelor of Environmental Design at UofM in Winnipeg, and my M.Arch at UBC here in Vancouver.
Notable accomplishments/awards:
One of my most notably fun accomplishments was building a series of warming huts for the frozen river trail in Winnipeg, MB with my cohort of architecture students. The huts still pop up every winter, and even made the cover photo for the recently published book.
I chose JDa because:
The office takes on important civic work that serves large scale populations, and highlights it through beautiful and innovative built projects that are otherwise commonly overlooked.
I bring to JDa:
A combined total of 10 years of architectural thinking, and a positive attitude about the rain in Vancouver.
Design philosophy:
Identify a concept at an intimate level, explore it broadly on a sociopolitical level, and iterate it’s use on a contemporary, everyday basis. Most recent exploration has been laundromats.
Most excited in architecture today about:
The scaling back of “things”. Materials, décor, spatial footprints…
When I’m not working you can find me:
At the Cinematheque, at VIFF, at the Rio, at home on the couch… anywhere I can watch a movie.
Pen, pencil or mouse?:
Pencil. Specifically, the Muji mechanical pencils (in various assortments).
Skill still unmastered:
Making the perfect boiled egg. It’s different every time.
If I wasn’t an architect I would be:
Maybe a chef, or sommelier. Something involving good food and bev.
